Movie Discussion

In episode four of the Movie Health podcast, we talk with Lynn Anderton, a qualified life coach and movie therapist. Lynn shares her deep connection with the movie “Shopgirl” in 2005, directed by Steve Martin and based on his book of the same title. As the discussion unfolds, Lynn reveals how this film’s themes of relationships, commitment, and self-discovery resonate deeply with her journey.

At the heart of Shopgirl is the story of Mirabelle Butterswear, played by Claire Danes, a young woman working behind the glove counter at a Sax department in Los Angeles. Despite her artistic inclinations, she finds herself in mundane circumstances, seeking a meaningful connection with someone. As her life intertwines with two very different men, Ray (Steve Martin) and Jeremy (Jason Schwartzman), a complex love triangle emerges, with each character grappling with commitment issues.

Lynn’s attraction to Shopgirl stems from her own experiences. Lynn recalls being in an intense and exhilarating relationship, much like Mirabelle’s journey with Ray. Lynn acknowledges that, like Mirabelle, she found herself drawn into the excitement of the relationship but later realized the need for self-awareness and personal responsibility in building healthy connections.

The film delves into Mirabelle’s emotional struggles, touching on her decision to stop taking antidepressants during the intense period of her relationship with Ray. This exploration resonates with Lynn, who understands the allure of intense emotions but also recognizes the importance of stability and healthy choices within a relationship.

As the movie progresses, all three characters—Mirabelle, Ray, and Jeremy—undergo significant transformations. Each character’s journey reflects the complexity of real-life relationships, and Lynn finds comfort in witnessing their growth and evolution on screen.

Shopgirl allows Lynn to view relationships from different angles, gaining insights into various perspectives. The film’s narrative reinforces that intimate connections involve more than emotions; they require understanding and open communication.

Despite the painful memories triggered by certain scenes, Lynn finds solace in revisiting Shopgirl repeatedly. The movie serves as a reminder that she is not alone in her experiences and that others share similar struggles. The characters in the film become her companions, providing her with comfort and understanding.

Lynn’s reflections on Shopgirl highlight the power of movies to connect deeply with our personal experiences. The film’s exploration of relationships, commitment, and personal growth resonates with her journey, reminding her that she is not alone in navigating the complexities of love and connection. Like Mirabelle, Lynn has learned the importance of self-awareness and responsibility in building healthy relationships, and “Shop Girl” continues to serve as a source of comfort and understanding in her life.

Our discussion on “Shopgirl” provides valuable insights into the complex interplay between mental health and relationships. By examining Mirabelle’s journey, she emphasizes the significance of understanding the impact of connections on one’s well-being. Additionally, she advocates for the power of creative pursuits in supporting mental health alongside traditional therapies. Ultimately, the movie reinforces the importance of acceptance in relationships, acknowledging that sometimes choosing what is best for oneself involves accepting the realities of certain situations. “Shop Girl” serves as a reminder that navigating mental health and relationships is a continuous journey of self-discovery and growth.

Tips for Mental Health

Lynn’s tips for mental health are drawn from themes found in Shopgirl:

  • Understanding the Impact of Relationships: Lynn highlights the significance of examining how connections with others affect our mental health. Mirabelle’s journey is a poignant example, as she experiences grief after a turbulent relationship. Lynn emphasizes that understanding this impact may be challenging at the outset of a relationship, but it is an essential part of the process. Acknowledging and processing these emotions is crucial for mental well-being.
  • The Role of Creative Pursuits: Mirabelle’s artistic pursuits, particularly her drawings, significantly support her mental health. Lynn advocates for the value of creative activities in tandem with conventional therapies and medication. Engaging in artistic endeavours can be therapeutic, as it absorbs the individual’s focus and provides a sense of achievement, contributing positively to their mental state.
  • Embracing Acceptance: One of the key lessons from “Shop Girl” is the importance of accepting people for who they are. This theme resonates deeply with Lynn, who believes acceptance is paramount in healthy relationships. It’s essential to understand that not every connection is meant to last, and sometimes, choosing what works best for oneself may involve accepting that certain relationships or situations may not be viable in the long run.
